How’s everything going with you? Some of my friends and clients have started getting the COVID vaccine. Mine is still unknown (not eligible yet), but I feel a bit lighter stepping into 2021.

Today, I want to talk about the difference between sensitive skin and sensitized skin.

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin is often a built-in condition. It is characterized by redness, irritation, and frequent inflammation. With sensitive skin, you never know what might trigger a reaction — it could be cosmetics, environmental changes, or even stress.

Other contributing factors include:

  • Stress and fatigue

  • Drugs or alcohol

  • Sun exposure

  • Pollution

  • Hormonal changes

  • The natural aging process

In short, sensitive skin tends to be more genetic or intrinsic.

Sensitized Skin

Sensitized skin, on the other hand, is usually acquired. It happens when external or internal conditions make otherwise healthy skin behave like it’s sensitive.

Examples include:

  • Environmental stress (like pollution or weather extremes)

  • Overuse or misuse of skincare products

  • Harsh treatments that disrupt the skin barrier

In these cases, the skin isn’t naturally sensitive — but it’s been pushed into a sensitized state.

Why It Matters

Understanding the difference can help you make smarter skincare choices. If your skin has always been sensitive, it’s important to keep your routine minimal and soothing. If your skin has become sensitized, the solution might be to adjust products, habits, or environmental factors.

If you’re wondering whether your current skincare routine is making your skin sensitized, I’d love to help. Check my Work With Me page for personalized guidance.

Stay safe and healthy.
