Is it really necessary to remember these "funny names”? 🤔
I still remember the first time I saw a Latin name on a flashcard while preparing for my aromatherapy class. At first, it seemed intimidating and unnecessary. But soon, I realized just how important Latin names are for identifying essential oils.
Why? Because one plant family can have many species — and each species carries different chemical compounds. That means they can have very different therapeutic properties, even if they share a common name.
Why Latin Names Matter
When you shop for essential oils, always check the Latin name on the label. For example:
Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
Spike Lavender (Lavandula latifolia)
Lavandin (Lavandula × intermedia)
They all sound like “lavender,” but their chemistry and therapeutic effects vary significantly.
If a bottle doesn’t list the Latin name, be cautious. It may not be the species you’re looking for — and if you want specific therapeutic actions, the difference truly matters.
A Simple Rule for Better Self-Care
Whether you’re seeking emotional support, skin care, or holistic wellness, always look beyond the common name. The Latin name is your best assurance that you’re getting the right oil for your needs.
Next time, I’ll share tips on how to recognize genuine, high-quality essential oils so you can shop with confidence. ✨
