How to Care for Your Skincare Products Like Food

Have you ever considered how you care for your skincare products once you bring them home? Just like food, they are delicate creations that need to be handled and stored properly to keep their quality — and ultimately, to keep your skin safe and happy.
My formula teacher once said, “Most contamination happens in the customer’s hands.” And it’s true! We often forget that our products are fresh, natural blends — not invincible chemicals.
Smart Habits for Your Skincare Ritual
Use a spatula– Always scoop cream or mask with a clean spatula instead of your fingers. This keeps bacteria from spreading into the jar.
Close the lid quickly– Exposure to air speeds up oxidation, especially for products rich in plant oils and extracts. Seal it tight after every use.
Store in a cool, dark place– Avoid leaving your products in the bathroom, where heat and humidity can shorten shelf life. A bedroom drawer or cabinet is better.
Shake well if needed– Natural formulations may separate slightly over time. A gentle shake brings them back together without harming the integrity.
Check expiration dates– Just like food, don’t hang on to products past their prime.
Using them too long can reduce effectiveness — or even irritate your skin.
Why It Matters
You wouldn’t eat food that’s been sitting around too long, even in the fridge. The same applies to your skincare. Freshness, proper storage, and mindful use ensure that every product works as intended — and that your skin receives the maximum benefit.
Treat your skincare like nourishment, because in many ways, it is.
